When you make a list of what you don’t like about your apartment now, this will help you keep priorities top of mind. Don’t look at apartments that have those same features. Do you need more space? A larger kitchen? Do you need a community that allows pets? Do you need extra storage space? Or a pool? A well-kept fitness center?

These days, real estate brokers are dealing with declining home sales and would have their clients believe that there is no better time than the present to buy a home. Prices are down and mortgage rates are at all-time lows.
Unfortunately for the brokers, many clients are not persuaded by that logic. Instead, in increasing numbers, they are choosing to rent — unconvinced that the housing market has yet hit bottom.

At The Gardens in Richmond, VA we are pet friendly, but did you know that pets can actually help you heal? Research shows that pets can provide physical health benefits and keep you emotionally healthy.
Not only do pets keep you connected to the world, they keep you connected to other pet people. While walking a pet obviously provides exercise, it has been determined that it is better exercise than walking alone. Pets keep you social. Think of all the conversations that start out on your walks with your dog that would not have otherwise begun. Pets offer a chance to meet people, to make friends.
But, beyond being a pet, service dogs offer an even additional support system. In addition to seeing and hearing dogs, people with other handicaps can benefit. Those with pets are approached more often for conversation than those who are alone.
Therefore, blind and wheelchair-bound kids with dogs get approached in public just for social interaction significantly more so than those without dogs. Even Alzheimer’s patients have been shown to be more responsive when dogs are around.
If you live in a house or apartment in Richmond, VA, the Virginia Department of Health urges residents to take precautions as they work to recover from Hurricane Irene.
Hurricanes, especially if accompanied by a tidal surge or flooding, can contaminate the public water supply or residential wells. Contaminated drinking water or unrefrigerated foods may cause illness.
Dispose perishable foods that have been without refrigeration for more than two hours. Fish, poultry, meat, eggs, milk and other dairy products, and leftovers are especially high risk. When in doubt, throw it out.
When power returns, inspect the food in your freezer. If there are still ice crystals in the package it is probably safe to refreeze. Use a thermometer to check the temperature and if your freezer remained under 40 F, the food is probably safe to refreeze. Otherwise, it is probably not safe. When in doubt, throw it out.
If you have medication that requires refrigeration but you lost power, check with the pharmacy on the label. A pharmacist can advise you if it can still be used.
Empty outdoor containers, tarps and other items around your home or apartment which create breeding sites for mosquitoes. Use repellant when outside.
Do not allow children to play in floodwater areas. Wash children's hands frequently (always before meals), and do not allow children to play with floodwater-contaminated toys that have not been disinfected. You can disinfect toys using a solution of one cup of bleach in five gallons of water.
Avoid using candles, especially around small children. Use battery-powered lamps and flashlights.
