Apartment Decorating Ideas for Fall

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, November 08, 2011

In Virginia, the fall season is here. Cooler weather is causing us to spend more time in our apartments in Glen Allen, VA. Maybe you would like to decorate your apartment for fall. Here are some suggestions that will not break the bank.

Throw rugs - Warm up the floors on chilly mornings. Roll up or throw down a rug as the seasons change. A soft area rug could really pull all the colors together in a room, and reduce echoes from hardwoods and tile.

Add Fabrics
- Fabric can really brighten up a room.  Plain sofas can be livened up with patterned pillows. New place mats are a great way to change the presentation of a meal. Pair a contrasting color or a pattern with plain plates. Dining room chairs or bar stools can be recovered for a whole new look.

Add photos to the wall - Use family photos and mismatched frames to fill a blank wall space in a family room or hallway. Lay them out on the floor and make a grid. Play with the design until it feels balanced and looks good. If you have trouble following the pattern, make paper bag cut-outs of the same pictures and tape them to the wall for the placement of the frames.

New Hand Towels - New towels and a bath mat in can give your bathroom a whole new look.

Have fun making some colorful changes in your apartment homes at The Gardens in Glen Allen.

Walking is a Great Way to Meet Friends and Better Your Health

Joseph Coupal - Monday, April 04, 2011

Glen Allen, VA is a beautiful area with both scenery and beautiful weather, so get outside. Getting fit, and staying healthy, doesn't have to be hard. There is an easy way to do it and almost anyone can. Go for a walk. Walking fits into any schedule, and it can be done alone or with a friend.

It isn't a miracle cure, but at times it can feel like it. Once you start walking you will become energized. Whether you are new to getting exercise through walking or if you are just starting out, there are numerous benefits from this simple exercise.

Of course there are many health benefits. Lack of physical activity is known to be a cause of heart disease. A fun and simple 2 mile a day walk can decrease this risk by up to 40%. Increased health and well being have been proven with any type of daily walking regimen.

But better yet, physical exercise has been proven to give a feeling of well-being. It gets our endorphins going and helps to better our mood. Who can argue with fresh air and sunshine? Getting outside for a 15 minute walk a day gets us our daily dose of vitamin D. When you feel happier you enjoy life more and others notice.

But the best benefit of all? When you walk, you can get to know your neighbors better. When you are outside you meet others who are outside. First smiles, then conversations begin. Start a walking group with a few of your neighbors. There will certainly be a few others that want to get outside, get walking and get fit. By walking you can better your health and enjoy the conversation you and your new friends will share.

Tax Deductions for Renters

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, March 31, 2011

Compared to owning a home, living in an apartment home community is incredibly relaxing and easy. Why do the work yourself when you can rely on a dedicated property and maintenance staff if anything needs fixing? Not to mention, no lawn maintenance or pool care.

Believe it or not, you often get more for your money when renting in an apartment home community. Oftentimes you can rent an apartment for much less than the cost of buying a home, especially if you live in or near a larger city like Richmond, VA.

Getting a big tax break is one of the great advantages of owning a home. But, you can't always rely on getting that tax break. If your annual mortgage interest payment and your other deductions aren’t greater than your standard tax deductions, you will not receive any tax benefit from owning a house. However, if you rent an apartment, you will always receive some form of tax relief because a large portion of your rent is tax deductible every year.

Now, if you use part of your apartment home for business, you can also deduct expenses for the business use of your home. These expenses include your monthly rent, renters insurance, and utilities. A home office deduction is available for renters as well as homeowners.

There are two basic requirements for your apartment home to qualify as a deduction. The first requirement is “regular and exclusive use” which means you regularly use part of your apartment exclusively for business purposes. If so, you can take a home office deduction for the extra room or space you are using. Secondly, it must be your principal place of business.
